Flush your tank water heater annually to remove sediment buildup that reduces efficiency — especially important in areas with hard water like Cook County. Test the pressure relief valve yearly by lifting the lever briefly — water should flow freely. Check the anode rod every 2-3 years and replace if heavily corroded. For tankless units, descale annually. Set temperature to 120°F to prevent scalding and save energy. Most water heaters last 8-12 years with proper maintenance.
